What's the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage, and which one is better for me?

If you're approaching 65 or already enrolled in Medicare, one of the first big decisions you'll face is this:

"Should I choose a Medicare Supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage plan?"

While both options help cover costs that Original Medicare doesn't fully pay, they work in very different ways. Understanding the difference is key to choosing the right plan for your health needs and budget.

What Is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan?

Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private insurance companies to help "fill the gaps" in Original Medicare (Part A and B). These gaps include things like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Key Benefits:

  • You can see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare, no network restrictions

  • Predictable out-of-pocket costs

  • Coverage stays with you as you travel anywhere in the U.S.

  • Plans are standardized (e.g., Plan G, Plan N), making comparison easier

Important Note: Medigap plans don't include prescription drug coverage, so you'll need a separate Part D plan.

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans replace your Original Medicare and are offered by private insurance companies. These often include prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing, and wellness perks. All in one plan.

Key Benefits:

  • Often have low or $0 monthly premiums

  • Built-in drug coverage (no separate Part D plan required)

  • Additional benefits not offered by Medicare or Medigap

Important Note: Most Advantage plans use provider networks (like HMO or PPO), which may limit where you can receive care.

TIP FROM ARNETT EVANS & COMPANY LLC

If you value flexibility, travel often, or have specific doctors you want to keep, Medicare Supplement plan like Plan G might be your best bet.

If you're looking for lower monthly costs and don't mind a provider network, Medicare Advantage may be a good fit.

Why Hospital Indemnity Insurance Is the Perfect Companion to Your Medicare Supplement Plan

Even with a solid Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, unexpected medical cost can sneak up on you, especially during a hospital stay. These cost can put serious strain on your finances, and unfortunately, Medicare and Medigap don't cover everything. Thant's where Hospital Indemnity Insurance comes in.

A Hospital Stay Shouldn't Brake the Bank

A hospital stay can take a toll, not just on your health, but on your wallet and your family's well-being. While your Medicare Supplement plan may handle many of the medical bills, it won't cover out-of-pocket expenses like:

  • Observation unit monitoring

  • Emergency room visits for injuries

  • Travel to and from a hospital or treatment center

  • Inpatient mental health services

Hospital Indemnity Insurance steps in to cover these gaps by paying you a cash benefit that you can use however you choose. Whether it's to help cover hospital bills, make up for lost income, or manage travel and lodging costs, the decision is up to you.
