Many people seek assistance to navigate the Medicare enrollment process. Fortunately, ther are numerous resources available to help.

There are federal and state programs designed to assist with Medicare enrollment, providing guidance on the best plan options based on individual health needs and financial circumstances.

  • State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIP): SHIP offers free, one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. They can help with understanding Medicare benefits, billing, claims and appeals.

  • Medicare.gov: The official Medicare website offers a wealth of information, including tools to compare Medicare plans and find local resources for additional support.

  • Social Security Administration (SSA): The SSA can assist with Medicare enrollment, particularly if you need help understanding your eligibility or applying for benefits.

Key Enrollment Periods

Missing deadlines can result in penalties or delayed coverage.

Initial Enrollment Period

Your Initial Enrollment Period or IEP, is the first opportunity to enroll in Medicare and is a seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after.

General Enrollment Period

If you didn't sign up for Part A and/or Part B during your IEP, you can enroll during the GEP, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. Coverage begins July 1, and you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

Medicare Open Enrollment Period

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period, from October 15 to December 7, allows you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Any changes you make during this period will take effect on January 1 of the following year.
